New Developments in Low-Valent and Early Transition Metal Ions, Metal-Ligand Multiple Bonds, and Catalytic Reactions Involving Methane

We have uncovered a new cycle for a titanium catalyzed dehydrogenation of linear alkanes to a-olefin and how most of the intermediates have inspired us to pursue, trap and isolate such species involved in such transformation. We will begin by discussing the chemistry of titanium alkylidynes and extension of this work to vanadium alkylidynes and their ability to form polymers with cyclic topology. C-H bond activation, including the activation of methane and the formation of methylidenes, and dehydrocoupling will be also addressed. Likewise, I will describe the role of TiII species including a tetrahedral and high-spin [(TptBu,Me)TiCl] (TptBu,Me = hydrotris(3-tert-butyl-5-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate) including its detailed spectroscopic and magnetic characterization. This TiII system has yielded a wealth of 2e- reactivity. Likewise, masked forms of TiII have also offered us insight on how to prepare terminal chalcogenido and bis-chalcogenido systems of group 5 and 4 transition metals. In the last component, I will introduce the use of organometallic Ir catalysts for the monoborylation of methane and how one can improve catalytic turnover by immobilizing the homogeneous IrI fragment [(dmpe)Ir(cod)]+ onto amorphous silica. If time permits, I will also introduce the concept of super basic nitrides in the context of nucleophilic metal nitrides.
